Regional Specialist Teaching Services

The Centre employs itinerant ResourceTeachers of the Deaf (RTOD) to support deaf and hearing-impaired students in mainstream schools throughout the South Island and the lower half of the North Island in the following centres:

They make regular visits a specified number of times each week to support students' classroom programmes. The support offered includes:

  • Assisting in the planning of I.E.P. goals for students and in the implementation of I.E.P. goals through individual tuition and in-class support
  • Applying, modeling and reinforcing a range of specialist communication strategies and techniques
  • Checking students' assistive listening devices
  • Organising and participating KIT (Keep In Touch) Days
