The role of the NZSL Tutor is to teach deaf students one on one, families and school team. Our students are in a wide geographical area so connecting with a tutor is often done by video calling.

NZSL Tutors under van Asch DEC umbrella covers the wide region in New Zealand mostly in Palmerston North, Hawkes Bay, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill. NZSL tutors tuition to the Deaf students, their parents and family/whanau, school, school staff and hearing classmates of the deaf student.

NZSL Tutors at Van Asch DEC support and promote NZSL through developing language skills and understanding of Deaf Culture. Most of them are often in an isolated area and the service is provided through Zoom with one of the NZSL Tutors. NZSL Tutors also provide service to teaching staff to polish or upgrade their signing skills.

NZSL Tutors are being funded by the MOE for NZ Sign Language Programme since 2014 with the ultimate aim of ensuring every Deaf student at a mainstream school receives the best possible education within a responsive and supportive environment.

The NZSL@School Project aims:

  • to build more responsive and active education for Deaf students whose primary language is NZSL and who attend their local school.
  • to increase the direct NZSL support and services to these Deaf students, their family/whanau and the schools they attend.
