Deaf Bilingual Provisions

Students enrolled in Ko Taku Reo, attend school at a Provision (also known as satellites or units) which is located at a Partner School.

Students are taught by Ko Taku Reo staff in the Provision or Home room. They join mainstream classes and can take part in school wide events where they are supported by Ko Taku Reo Staff.

Ko Taku Reo Deaf Bilingual Provisions operate as a 'school within a school'.

Auckland

  • Year 1–6

    Students attend either mainstream classes supported by Ko Taku Reo staff or are taught in the provision itself by a trained teachers of the Deaf.

    The provisions are welcoming, modern and an access-able learning environment

    We have 3 Auckland based provisions:

  • Year 7–8

    Based at Kelston Intermediate School in West Auckland, our provision caters for students Year 7–8.

    Students attend either mainstream classes supported by Ko Taku Reo staff or are taught in the provision itself by trained teachers of the Deaf.

    Our Provision has two classrooms purpose-built to support our Deaf learners.

    Kelston Intermediate is a very inclusive school and our students are very much a part of the mainstream school day to day running and culture.

  • Year 7–10

    Based at Ormiston Junior College in South Auckland our provision caters for students Year 7–10.

    Students attend either mainstream classes supported by Ko Taku Reo staff or are taught in the provision itself by trained teachers of the Deaf.

    Ormiston Junior College is a very inclusive school and our students are very much a part of the mainstream school day to day running and culture.

  • Year 9–13

    Students attend either mainstream classes supported by Ko Taku Reo staff or are taught in the provision itself by a trained teachers of the Deaf.

    Each student develops an individualised programme with their teachers and parents that best meets their need to complete secondary education. Students are able to enter for a number of qualifications such as NCEA (L1, L2 and L3 plus UE) and/or qualifications such as the South Pacific Education Courses (SPEC).

    Each school offers a wide range of subjects and co-curricular and extra-curricular activities

    We have 3 Auckland based provisions:

  • Year 13+

    Senior students Year 13+ from all parts of our wider operational scope may choose to attend Tū Kōkiri, which is based at Kelston, West Auckland.

    This post-secondary school programme is generally designed as a two-year pathway working towards life readiness either in employment or continuing education at a tertiary level.

    Ko Taku Reo staff the provision with Teachers of the Deaf, Educational Associates, and an Educational Interpreter. This Provision is a welcoming, modern and accessible learning environment where students experience a variety of options, such as work experience, community engagement and tertiary taster courses. Each student develops an individualised programme, along with their teachers and parents that best meets their goals to be able to take the next step beyond school. A full range of co-curricular activities, camps and community linkages is also available.

    All pathways allow each student to cover the five key competencies as set out in the NZ Curriculum and provide a positive foundation for success in life beyond school.

  • Year 12–13

    Students take part in courses at Massey Trades Academy, this caters for students years 12–13.

Christchurch

  • Year 1–8

    Our Christchurch primary provision is based at Wharenui School, a highly inclusive full primary school with students from Year 1–8, located in the Christchurch suburb of Riccarton. Our classrooms were purpose-built for Deaf learners. Kotuku Cottage has two classrooms, a breakout space, and meeting room.

  • Year 9–13

    Based at Hillmorton High School, our provision caters for students Years 9–13. Children attending the Hillmorton Hub have access to full extracurricular activities provided by the partner school.

  • Year 11+

    Te Puna Wai o Waipapa Hagley College is a highly inclusive high school situated near the centre of Christchurch. This provision caters for students Year 11 and above and those on a transition out of school programme.

Wellington

  • Year 1-6

    Our Wellington Primary Deaf Bilingual Provision is based at Linden Primary School, a highly inclusive primary school with students from Year 1–6. This school is located in and has served the Wellington areas of Tawa and Linden since 1952. Ko Taku Reo has had a teaching space since 2021. The Provision also hosts students from our Outreach School each Tuesday for an NZSL Hub.
