One of the services that van Asch Deaf Education Centre provides is a Residential Special School which enrols deaf or hard of hearing students from Year 1 - 15. Van Asch School enrolled students attend one of our three bilingual provision at different locations across Christchurch. Our bilingual provisions are based at our partner schools Wharenui School and Hillmorton High School. Our Transition Programme is based at Hagley Community College.
In the bilingual provisions, Students are taught by trained Teachers of the Deaf in the home room. Our students are provided with high quality individualised teaching and learning programmes that integrate our local curriculum: language, literacy, deaf studies and social & emotional learning with the New Zealand Curriculum.
Partner schools are supportive and inclusive Deaf Culture and the use of NZSL in classes, sports events and school assemblies. To develop goals specific to the educational, social and emotional needs of each student, Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) are created involving the student, parents, caregivers, teachers and other specialists where appropriate. These are collaboratively reviewed and revised bi-annually.
