Team Support
Types of Support Offered
The Specialist Resource Teachers: Literacy, are members of the Centre's Specialist Resource Team. The Specialist Resource Team provide support for deaf and hearing-impaired students in regional settings, their families and the professionals who support them.
The Specialist Resource Teachers: Literacy, offer support in the following areas:
Preschool courses
• Choosing appropriate books for babies/toddlers/preschoolers
• Book sharing strategies
• Supporting preschoolers with writing
Parent/caregiver support
• Discussion of progress
• Awareness of the stages of reading/writing development
• Supporting children with reading/writing at home
• Demonstration
Teacher support
• School visits covering
• Reading and writing assessment, goal setting, strategies and resource support
• Demonstration of reading and writing strategies
• Assistance in self-reflection through discussion and observation
- Professional development for staff working with deaf students
- Consultation via phone/e-mail/skype
Assessment and/or placement visits
• Reading and writing assessments of school-aged students

• Formal/informal retell
• Running records
• Marie Clay diagnostic test for emergent readers
• Reading interview
Writing
• Analysis of written language sample with reference to 'Deaf Students' Written English Exemplars' and the 'New Zealand English Curriculum Exemplars'.
