Picture Books with Deaf Characters

I Am Deaf
by Bronwyn Tainui

Gilt Edge Publishing
2004

This non-fiction book is part of a New Zealand series of books called Everyone is Different. The book features Teacher of the Deaf, Richard Buckley and his former students at the Te Aro School Deaf Unit in Wellington. The student’s names in the book have been changed to protect their privacy. The text is from a child’s perspective and is well supported by clear, interesting photographs. Snippets of two days in the life of Josh are explored which incorporates a visit to a museum to see an exhibition.
