|Fourteen colour cards showing transition words/phrases. Transition signals are connecting words or phrases that act like bridges between different parts of writing.
They link sentences and paragraphs together smoothly so that there are no abrupt jumps or breaks between ideas. All of the sentences in a paragraph need to tie together as a unit. They need to flow and be connected as well as make sense.
Some temporal transitions:
first, next, then, and then, finally, at last, today, suddenly, while, after that.
Some comparative transitions:
as, so, and so, however, although.
Prepare a paragraph for the student without transitional words. Complete a shared activity together to insert transitional words from a given bank of words and phrases.
