Base School
Throughout the long history of Deaf education in New Zealand, van Asch has developed in its community a pride in educational achievement. Students are taught in small classes by qualified, experienced Teachers of the Deaf. Their programmes of instruction are based on individual education plans developed with input from the student and their family. Students have the opportunity to receive specialised one-to-one assistance with spoken language and literacy. They may also receive specialised support from the Centre's language assistant and communicators. The Centre's Deaf staff provide students with excellent role models.
The New Zealand Curriculum is delivered in New Zealand Sign Language, Signed Supported English and oral/aural modes. In addition to the New Zealand Curriculum, students also have access to a local curriculum. Programmes in the local curriculum include Deaf Studies, literacy and speech/language.
All classroom are equipped with a range of computer hardware and software giving students access to excellent Information Technology programmes.
