Clinical Audiology

Behavioural hearing assessment for children of all ages. The centre's audiology service can offer behavioural assessment for children of all ages, all levels of development, and those with multiple sensory and physical disabilities.

Specialist educational and paediatric audiological support is available for staff employed at or by van Asch Deaf Education Centre, as well as for the parents, families and caregivers of hearing impaired and deaf children seen at the Centre.

Promoting the coordination of audiological, early intervention and special education services for hearing impaired children with audiologists and advisers on deaf children in Central and Southern New Zealand.

Monitoring and Advisory Service

  • Approval of applications for hearing aid funding for children in Central/Southern New Zealand
  • Evaluation of the suitability of new hearing aid models for children
  • Evaluation of techniques for the assessment of children's hearing
  • Evaluation of techniques for the assessment of the benefits of hearing instruments
  • Provision of advice to the Ministry of Health regarding the funding of children's hearing aids
 

Clinical Teaching

Currently, the Audiology Department participates in training courses for audiology students and audiologists. Van Asch Deaf Education Centre is an affiliated clinical training provider for students undertaking study for the Masters degree in Audiology in the Department of Communication Disorders at the University of Canterbury. The Centre also hosts audiologists from time to time who wish to observe clinical practice or engage in tutorials relating to paediatric habilitative audiological care.
